UNIDO and RSS continue to develop new growth opportunities for Jordan’s industry in the second phase of the EU funded MED TEST III project

AMMAN, 11 September 2019 - The second phase of the EU funded SwitchMed / MED TEST III component was introduced today to representatives from Ministries, the Jordanian industry and the delegation of the European Union to Jordan at a kick-off meeting in the Royal Scientific Society (RSS). A unique and innovative component of the SwitchMed Program, the MED TEST III project supports the development of a more resource efficient and competitive industry in Jordan. The second phase of the project will aim to extend the breakthrough achieved in the MED TEST II project (2015-2018) to demonstrate the effectiveness and economic growth potential of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) methodology to additional industry sectors, companies and service providers in Jordan.
An agreement was signed between the United Nations Industrial Organization (UNIDO) and the RSS to implement the MED TEST III project in Jordan. The RSS will in partnership with the Chambers of Industry, and under the technical guidance of UNIDO and the strategic guidance of the national focal points from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply and the Ministry of Environment, drive forward the adoption of a Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) in Jordan.
“It is very important to execute RECP assessment projects in the industrial sector to enhance the competency of the national industries through optimizing the productivity and reducing the wastes of raw materials, water and energy.”, said Eng. Rafat Assi, Vice President for Consultations and Studies at the RSS. “Such projects will assist the green growth of the country and mitigate the challenges we face in water scarcity, energy supply, and support the ultimate goal of the RSS in promoting the sustainable development of the Kingdom through addressing relevant global challenges
Eng. Sulafa Mdanat, UNIDO’s Representative in Jordan explained that “the project is fully in line with both Jordan’s national priorities and the sustainable development goal number 9 (SDG), which focuses on inclusive and sustainable industrialization and fosters innovation.”
Enhancing productivity by integrating practices and technology that lead to greater efficiency in the use of natural resources, a reduction of waste and energy consumption, opportunities for innovation and value creation, is central to UNIDO’s TEST approach. Implemented from 2015-2018 by the RSS, in partnership with Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI), the MED TEST II project identified a potential annual savings of over 1.6 Million JOD that resulted in 22,181 MWh/yr in energy savings; 63,844 m3/yr of water savings; 404 tons of raw material savings, and 83 tons of landfilled solid waste avoided for the 12 participating companies in Jordan.

The methodology also increases the productivity and competitiveness of the industrial sector in Jordan with a higher chance of access to international markets with good quality products and compliance with Environmental standards”, said Eng. Basel Alnobani/National Focal Point of TEST from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply. “We are looking forward For the MED TEST III project and we are sure it will be a huge step forward towards a circular economy and to improve patterns of Sustainable Consumption and Production while providing socio-economically positive effects.”
Scaling-up the achievements of TEST to other sectors and companies, will be the focus in the second phase of the SwitchMed / MED TEST III project in Jordan. Ten additional companies from the chemical and food sectors will undertake RECP assessment and 10 additional service providers will be qualified to offer the TEST methodology in Jordan. In addition, the cooperation with academia, vocational training centers, university professors/master students, and financial institutions will be intensified to raise awareness on RECP.
In addition to these objectives, the project aims at activating the synergy and coordination between stakeholders to setting-up a national support scheme for mobilizing technical assistance to industry in the area of RECP leveraging on national fund and donors, and the introduction of specific national policy instruments for RECP in industry.
